FIRES
THREE SHANNON SHOPS DESTROYED. (Per Press Association). A large block of three shops wa* destroyed by fire in Shannon early this morning, one being occupied by Aitcheson and Son (grocers), another by G. C. Young (cycle shop), the third being vacant. The block was owned by H. Hook and the building and stocks are a total loss. At one time it seemed that there was danger of the fire spreading and the Levin Brigade was telephoned for, there being no brigade in Shannon. A detachment from the former went 12 miles to the scene by ear and checked the spread of the flames The insurance are not available.
A disastrous fire swept the business premises of Rangataua, near Oi.lrt.une, early this morning, destroying seven shops and the town ■all. The shops were:—Grocery and Irapery, occupied by A. Mifiifie; iniiard room and barber’s shop, oc•upied by J. Cunningham and G Roussell; boot shop, occupied by J. Scott; confectionery shop, occupied by F. Palmer, bookseller's shop oesupied by C. J. Hawken, and also an unoccupied shop. The insurances are' unavailable, but are believed to be low.
