THE Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri FRIDAY, 25TH DECEMBER, 1874.

(£t)tt#tmao lias come again, and will be welcomed with a hearty greeting, We rejoice in the one universal holiday of the year, when all, —even the tired printers, whose work scorns never to end —endeavor to obtain a brief season of enjoyment, and respite from their labors. Christmas in Hawke's Bay in 1874 will not altogether maintain its character as a " merry " season. While business of all kinds is outwardly brisk and work abundant, there are general complaints of the scarcity of ready money, and the prospect of meeting those bills which have the unpleasant knack of falling due at the festive season will in many instances introduce an element of anxious care into the midst of that enjoyment which is suited to the time. in which are watched with keen interest from this nook of the earth's surfaceis depressing ; a spirit breathing anything but " peace on earth " is abroad in Europe, in which wild times appear to be approaching, and we in sew Zealand are not so far removed from the great world without, but that we feel the tide of these influences. Under these circumstances we find no difficulty in accounting for the unwonted cloud which seems to overshadow our Christmastide. Yet on this one day, of all others, we doubt not the cheerful side of human nature will assert itself, and though in some instances the virtue may be exercised, like the jollity of Mark Tapley, "under difficulties," we trust all our readers will enjoy—what we heartily wish them—
