TO 12th OCTOBER. The American Government have paid the British officials the full amount of the indemnity-awarded by the mixed commission.
Brigham Young is dangerously ill. Surdman and Co., extensive sugar merchants at New York, hare failed. A terrible riot occurred between North and South Ireland laborers on the Delaware railway, in which many were injured. The Government have arranged for a tri-monthly mail between California and China.
W. M. Ewart is spoken of as the most likely candidate for the Presidentship. The American riflemen beat Sigley's Irish team.
A lot of masked burglars robbed the' Pennsylvania Bank at Philadelphia, after gagging the president and cashier. The Custom House and eight dwelling houses have been swept away by a tornado at Bragos. Negro disturbances are prevalent in the South and Western States. Yellow fever is raging at Pensacola, The Grand Trunk Railway, Canada, has had the guage altered from broad to narrow. Townsend and Co., bankers at New Haven, have failed for nearly three millions of dollars. The second match to decide the superiority for long distances of breach and muzzle-loaders has resulted in favor of the latter. Both Tilton and Moulton have been indicted for malicious libel of the Rev Ward Beecher. Gordon Bennett, of the New York Herald, offers to pay one-fourth of the entire cost of a new Arctic expedition. Thirty-nine medical students at Buffalo have been arrested as resurrectionists. Commercial credit at New York has been disturbed through recent failures. Hep worth Dixon arrived at New York on the 2nd October. The English-Newcastle Chamber of Commerce condemns the reciprocity treaty with America.
