**.(*4l4Xl ov LVlVliiblJVt In an article on the new system of industrial policies by the Government, the Auckland Star says t —“ Whatever diversity of opinion may exist respecting the general policy of the Government of New Zealand, the warmest commendation is due to the efforts made to bring the blessings of Life Assurance home to the people.” A meeting of cricketers was held in Christchurch on Thursday night to consider the proposed visit of the Victorian Eleven. There was an influential attendance, and the project was warmly approved of. A committee was appointed to obtain particulars of the probable expenses, to see what subscriptions could be obtained, and to confer with the Dunedin cricketers on the matter. On Thursday night a meeting was held in Christchurch, to consider the question of chartering a vessel to convey passengers to the Palmer River diggings, Queensland. There was a very large attendance, and guarantees were given for fifty passengers, should a veseel be obtained on reasonable terms. A committee was appointed to make inquiries in the matter. Mr Bryce (Wanganui) addressed his constituents on Friday evening. He defended Mr Vogel, and said Mr Reader Wood would have brought forward a resolution to abolish the northern provinces, if the Premier had not done so. At the end of the meeting, the following resolution was unanimously carried:—“That this meeting accords Mr Bryce its renewed confidence, and believes that the abolition of provincialism in the North Island will tend to greater freedom, ecomomy, and efficiency in the administration of the government.”
