Mr Borlase, Mayor of Wellington, has brought an action against Mr Ludlam, of the Hutt, for libel contained in certain words at a recent meeting, reflecting on his character and capabilities as Provincial Solicitor. The Post states that the General Government have, without any legal authority, advanced £5,000, at five per cent., to Mr Halcombe, for the purpose of being expended in public works on tho Manchester block, better known as Colonl Feilding's settlement During last session Mr Halcombe, who is colonial manager, applied to have given back security to the extent of £7,500, which they had given the Government for the due performance of the conditions of the contract, but tho Provincial Government refused. The Provincial Government of Wellington have advertized for sale, on October 26, a hundred thousand acres of pastoral and agricultural land.. One block adjoining the Rangitikei district contains 44,000 acres, another on the East Coast, 43,000. There are five other blocks, of which 6,000 acres are in the vicinity of Wellington. The Provincial Government havo also determined to sell the land now under reclamation between Pipitea Point and Mill's foundry, upon which tho new Government buildings and railway station are to be erected. The area is about forty acres, and will be sold on 21st December. The New Zealand Times, 18th Sept., writes:—Many will hear with much regret the news of the death of Mrs Sam Howard, the hostess of the Bank Hotel, Wellington. Mr and Mrs Howard came to the Colony several years ago, and for some time were leading members of a dramatic company at the Theatre Royal, Dunedin. At intervals, subsequently, they both appeared on the stage in several of the cities of the Colony, and Mrs Howard was always a favorite with an audience, being a clever actress in comedy. But she had other and homely qualities which made her a favorite with all who met her, and especially with those who had occasion to become acquainted with her as a hostess. The Lyttelton Times yesterday morning stated that G. C. Bowen, 'Esq., R.M., of Christen urcrr, had been offered a portfolio in the Cabinet, and a seat in the Upper House. The department offered to Mr Bowen is that of Minister of Justice. The following are the weights for the Auckland Spring Meeting.
