Yet Another.—Mr Mackay, the General Government Agent for Waikato, threatens an action for libel against the Thames Advertiser, for stating that he had made purchases in the Upper Thames on his own account. ■ ■ Earthquakes in the Interior.—Rotorua telegrams state that twenty shocks of earthquake were felt at Ohiuemutu on Sunday night, but no damage was done, The Natives and the Land.—The natives are petitioning the Government to stop further purchases till the native title is individualized. 10th June. Control of the Police.—The Provincial Council has carried, by a large majority, the motion affirming the desirability of the General Government retaining the control of the police. The Citizens' Ball to the Governor was attended by over 400 persons. GRAHAMSTOWN. 9th June. Charges against Mr Maokay.—The Thames Advertiser has been publishing a series of disclosures about land-jobbing, and has charged Mr Mackay with buying a large block of country for his own private benefit, when acting as agent for the Government for the purchase of laud. 10th June. The Libel Action. —Mr Mackay has commenced proceedings for libel. The Advertiser declines to retract, repeats the charges ; and says that it is prepared to prove them ; also, cases of land being registered in Mr Mackay's own name. WELLINGTON. 9th June. The Loan.—By the mail steamer Albioni the Government received a telegram from the Agent-General, stating that the balance of the million and a-half loan of fj per cent, debentures have been sold. The immigrants.—With .the exception of a few families, all the recently* arrived immigrants have obtained employment. The Session.—The Post says that it is reported on good authority that the next session will not exceed six or eight weeks. 10th June. Post-office Savings Bank.—The rate of interest allowed on deposits in the Postoffice Savings Bank will be increased on the Ist July from 4 per cent, to 4£ on deposits of £2OO, and from 3 to 4 per cent, on £SOO deposits. WANGANUI, 10th June. Fatal Accident.—John Donovan, late chief steward of the steamer Manawatu, was drowned last night, by walking over the edge of the wharf while leaving the steamer. The body has not yet been recovered. dREYTOWN. 11th June. Cottage Building Company. —At a public meeting here it was resolved to form a Cottage Building Company. NELSON. 9th June. The Governor.—His Honor the Superintendent has received a letter from his Excellency the Governor, stating that he expects to leave the Manukau in the yacht Blanche to-morrow, and will arrive here on Friday. The Provincial Council will be prorogued this afternoon. WESTLAND. HOKITIKA. 9th June, Want of Confidence. A notice of motion of no confidence in the Executive, to be moved this evening, has been tabled in the Provincial Council. 10th June. The vote of want of confidence in the new Executive lapsed, in consequence of the absence of the mover of the motion. Education Rate.—The slicing scale of household rating for the Education Bill has been adopted. CANTERBURY, LYTTELTON, 9th June. Small-pox.—A fresh case of small-pox has broken out amongst the Northampton immigrants. CHRISTCHURCH. lOfch June. Financial Statement. vincial Council last night, the Treasurer made his Financial Statement. The balance in hand on September 30, 1873, was £424,225, and the receipts since that date to May 31, are £542,152, making a total of £966,377. The expenditure during the same period was £316,390, leaving a credit balance on May 31 of £649,986. The estimated receipts" for niue months ending March 31, 1875, were £512,579, making, with balance in hand, a total revenue of £ 1,170,308. The estimated expenditure for the same period is £1,113,41.2. The proposed expenditure on buildings, including £46,976 for district schools, £lO,lOl for normal schools, and £14,540 for public buildings, is £133,004. The proposed expenditure on bridges is £IOB,OBI ; ditto on roads, £51,874; proposed miscellaneous expenditure is 64,000, including irrigation of plains and water supply for Lyttelton, £5,000 j for planting, £8,496; for public liraries in country districts, £86,153 ; proposed expenditure on railways, £196,000,; and proposed expenditure on grants in aid, £5,155. Geological Surveys.—The Council have recommended the Superintendent to place a sum on the Estimates for continuing geological surveys. OTAGO. DUNEDIN. 11 th June. A Large Fire has taken place in Staf-ford-street —the most destructive which has been known for years. It broke out inF. Reid's store; but its origin is unknown, The
goods of the Mosgiel woollen factory were in the same premises. The insurances aie: Mosgiel factory, £2,000 in the New Zealand Company, and £I,OOO in the Standard. K'eid's, £SOO in the New Zealand, £I,OOO in the South" British, and £I,OOO in the Standard. There was great excitement, numbers of buildings being threatened with destruction. The Fire Brigade worked well. The New Bank.—Seventy thousand of the new Colonial Bank shares have been placed in Otago and Southland alone. AUSTRALIAN. [per hero,] •> MELBOURNE. ■ 2nd June, O'Farrell, the Victorian defaulter, eseaped from Fiji in a small vessel, for Tanna. From thence he hopes to escape to South America. SYDNEY. 2nd June; The Government's Pet Ruffian.—The Government is likely to be defeated on the motion disapproving of Gardiner's release. Meetings in the country continue being beld, to protest against the Governor's proposed clemency! to bushrangers. [Here is an instance of the influence of example. Bather than be outdone by the NewjZealand Government in "clemency," a New South Wales ministry, it appears, will submit to a Parliamentary defect. We doubt whether Mr Vogel would have made the release of Sullivan a ministerial question.]
