AUCKLAND. 7th March. The Anazi Case.—lu the Police Court, this morning, Captain Holman appeared to answer to a summons respecting the stranding of the barque Anazi. The Court wk s crowded. William Helier Holman was|first examined, all the witnesses being ordered out of the Court. The captain blamed the second officer for the accident. In answer 10 a question, the witness declined to state whether he was intoxicated. He admitted that when the vessel struck he went below leaving the vessel in charge of the officers. He also admitted attempting to strike the second mate with a knuckleduster. The witn ss said this was his first voyage as master. He had been chief officer in the Crusader and Zealandia. The case was adjourned till next Wednesday.' 9th March. The Customs Receipts on Friday were £2,154, on Saturday £2,993, the largest amounts ever collected in the port. The week's returns were £7,276. OHAHAMSTOWN. 7th March. The widow of One Hamilton has been anested for selling gunpowder, without a license, TAUBANOA. 7th March. Large blocks of laud, amounting in the aggregate to about 90,000 acres, are being taken up. WELLINGTON. (sth March. Co-operation.—At a meeting held last night, a co-operative baking society (limited) was established. The Races.—For the Hutt Stakes Batter 1; Steeltrap 2. For the Consolation Handicap, Kakapo 1; Delusion a good second. Tommy Dodd won the Hurdle Race--7 th March. His Excellency Sir James Fergusson and Governor Weld have gone on a cruise round the coast in the Blanche. The Tribune sa>s that the health of the Hon. John Hall, now in London, has quite given way. Bth March. A Terrific G-ale occurred last night' Two colliers were lost—the ship Wellington and the barque Cyrus between Lyell's Bay and Sinclair Heads. Seven lives wer e lost—two from the ship Wellington : Johnston, the cook, and Rushton, a oeaman,—arid five from the Cyrus : Mrs Wrigglesworth' the wife of the well-known photographer' and her two children ; also, Robert Smith the second officer j and a seaman called George. Captain Hill, of the Wellington' and eight seameUj pulled round into the harbor, after escaping from the ship in a miraculous manner. The first mate was saved by clinging to a life-buoy. The second mate managed to swim ashore. The people .on shore assisted the Cyrus's crew and officers ashore with ropes, but they were all much cut and bruised. Both vessels were smashed into ten thousand pieces, and went ashore within a few yards of each other. They left port on Friday, bound for Newcastle. No bodies have been yet recovered. 9th March. The Shipping Disasters.-The aggregate losses sustained by the wrecks of the ship Wellington and barque Cyrus were £B,OOO. The Wellington was purchased for £4,000, before the rise in ship property. She was insured for £I,OOO in the New Zealand Company ; £I,OOO in the South British, and £I,OOO in the Victoria. The Cyrus was insured for £I,OOO in each of the South British and New Zealand Companies ; she was worth £2.700. Mrs Wrigglesworth and children were crushed to death by the falling of t\\c deck-house just as the captain was making an effort to get them on the rocks; he ordered the second mate aud a seaman to try to get to ft certain rock bo as to pass a rope
to it in order to save the woman and children ; the men made the attempt gallantly, buta/wire washed off. and were seen no more. None of the bodies have yet been found. A preliminary Inquiry into the late wrecks w.as held to-day at the Custom-house < Tlie official inquiry has yet to be held. Qwing.to the heavy gale which raged on Saturday, some apprehension was felt regardinu the safety of the Blanche with his Excellency Governor Fergusson and Governox Weld on board ; but the yacht arrived safely in harbor this afternoon. . The Council is about to take active steps to abate the nuisance which is supposed to be the cause. HOKITIKA. 9th March. The pay of the police has been raised sixpence per day. It is now 9s 6d. CANTERBUEY. CHRISTCHUKCH. 6th March. The Regatta.—The Westland crew have purchased a four-oared out-rigger from the Canterbury Rowing-Club, in which to com* pete at the luterprovincial Regatta. 0 T A G 0. DUNEDIN. 6th March. Provincial Elections.—The polling for the return of one member to the Provincial Council resulted as follows :—Reeves, 588 ; C. B. Cargill, 428; Chapman, 50; Isaacs, 60. 7th March. ' Sunday Trains.—The Government has replied to the deputation in reference to running Sunday trains, that the matter will be fully considered in the Provincial Council. The Land Board has resolved to resti ict the issue of bush licenses, in consequence of the rapid disappearance of the forests. Provincial Elections.—The defeat of Mr E.B. Cargill, and the election of Mr Rees to the Provincial Council, is considered as a great blow struck at the old identity school. Sporting.—The preseut state of the bet* ting for the Cup is 3 to 1 against Calumny,.* to 1 against Lurline, 6 to 1 against Atlas, 6 to 1 against Papapa, all taken ; 100 to 8 against Yatterina, 100 to 10 against Gossip, 100 to 10 against Parawhenua, to 20 against Templeton, all offered ; 5 to 1 against Butterfly, taken; 100 to 12 against Earl of Lynne, 7to 1 against -Spritsail, both taken ; 100 to i against Verbena, 100 to 8 against Rosina, 100 to 2 against Burdett, 100 to 3 against Nelly King, offered. ;
