Loss of a Boat at Wangarei. —The Paru i corespondent of the Cro>s, writing on the 2nd February, says : *’ I have just h ard of the loss of the VVangarei Heads boat, and the narrow escape of tlnce settlers. The accident took place at Tutukaka entrance last Friday night, and was caused by the bo it striking against a rock while beating in. The boat contained the member for Oteniarea, Mr George McLeod, her owner, and Mr John Munro, junior. I have not heard all particulars, but I believe they had to pass the rest of the night on the reef, getting ashore next day with great difficulty. Fortunately the weather was fair, but the sweU rendered their position dangerous.” The A.S.N. Co.’s steamer James Paterson has been totally lost at Masthead Island, on the Queensland coast. A Steam Junk— The trial trip of the first Chinese junk fitted with steam power has been made with great success. A Missionary Ship.— A steamer has been purchased, at the cost of £1550, to go on a missionary expedition to New Guinea, at the expense of Miss Baxter of Eliangowan, sister of the late Sir David Baxter.
