There were no applications in excess of the supply. -" ;; Mr Moriarty, ,the Sydney Government engineer, reports in favor of the water supply from the Western Springs ; he estimates the cost at £66,714, and the supply of water at two 'millions four hundred gallons in the driest seasons. Bth February. A terrible circular gale blew from the north-east last night, doing great damage to the shipping—estimated at £5,000. Several vessels broke from their moorings, and were wrecked from being driven into each other ; numerous boats being also sunk. No loss of life is reported. 9 th February. Tlie Wave Queen arrived on Saturday evening, U 5 days from London ; she brings 15 saloon, and 18 steerage passengers. Dr. Philson reported all well on board, but the gale was severe for the Customs boat to return. The police have memorialised for increased pay. During the gale on Saturday, the steamer Challenger was ran into by the schooner Dauntless, which vessel broke loose from her anchors. The steamer smashed against the wharf, and sank a complete wreck. The English barque Lauderdale broke from her moorings, and smashed into the whar 0 several feet. The ntw schooner Corali had her stern completely smashed off; the cutter Avon and several cargo boats were sunk; the steamer Devonport had her paddle boxes smashed; the schooners Dauntless and Gemini and other vessels had their bulwarks much broken ; the ship Chile broke away from the wharf, but her anchors pulled her up ; a yacht, anchored off the North Head, sank, but her occupants were rescued. Later,' The Wave Queen caine' up the harbor yesterday evening. No further damage than that reported was caused by the gale. The damage done in town was trifling. The walls of Masefield's foundry fell, and crushed in an adjoining cottage. The steamer Challenger is completely smashed to pieces. A cutter sank on top of her. A seaman belonging to the ship Wave Queen, named Richard Knott, was drowned whilst endeavoring to rescue the crew of the cutter Challenge]'. George Arnoff, one of the Challengers crew, was also drowned. The Challenger was wrecked on the Eangitoto reef. The men clung to the rocks until the two men mentioned above were washed off exhausted. A man named Washington is believed to be lost from the yacht Columbia, which vessel was wrecked at the breakwater. Four Maoris are also reported to have been lost. The Southern Cross estimates the damage done to the shipping and in town, at £12,390. Latest. Surveys of the shipping show that the damage is far under the gross estimate. The vessels are not so much injured as at first supposed. The total damage is now estimated at £G,OCO. A body which has floated ashore at the North Shore is supposed to be that of the owner of the yacht Pearl. In the case of that vessel four lives have been lost. Mr Moriarty, the Sydney Government engineer, proceeds to Greymouth to report upon the harbor works there. ALEXANDRA, 9th February. It is reported here that Tawhiao. on his return from Kawhia, will be met by a party from Tc Kuiti, who will escort him on an ineog. flying visit to Ngaruawahia and the settlements. TAURANG A, 7th February. The Superintendent and his Executive are visiting this district for the purpose of ascertaining the capabilities of the district for the reception of immigrants. There is to be a public meeting to-night. 9th February. The Superintendent and Executive hive held a monster meeting this afternoon, here were great rejoicings, and songs of welcome were sung. Complimentary allusions were made to the Native Minister and Mr Commissioner Clarke. WELLINGTON, 7th February. . Whilst the correspondence was proceeding between the General Government and the Provincial Government of Wellington, upon the subject of bridges, roads, and other works in the Appropriation Ordinance lately passed by the Provincial Council, the appropriation, about £50,000, on account of an anticipated loan, it was discovered that the. Provincial Auditor has signed a warrant for the whole amount appropriated. This is likely to lead to his dismissal, and it is also probable that the ordinance will be disallowed. The Public Hall Company have decided to erect an hotel and three shops, besides improving the inside of the theatre, which is not paying at present. The contemplated improvements will cost £5,000. The journeymen bakers are agitating for eight hours, and Is 9d per hour overtinw Masters say they cannot afford to comply with their demands. 9th February. The Hon. J. Vogel and the Hon. E. Richardson both left for Nelson last night in the Colonial Government p.s. Luna. At Messrs Bethune and Hunter's sale today fleece wool in grease realized Jlfd; lambs, 10J,d; locks, 3J-d; greasy wool, lOd. Buyers were few, and showed no inclination to speculate. NELSON, 6th February. Mr Vogel has accepted an invitation to a public dinner here on Tuesday next. 7th February. Major Gordon has Inspected the City Artillery and the Rifle;?, and complimented
them on their appearance. There are fair samples of butter and cheese, at from 6d to Gd. •. DUNE DIN, 6th February. The City Council have at length decided that the Octagon is the best site for the town hall. . . The Mikado is advertised to leave here, for San Fraucisco, via intermediate New Zealand Ports and Honolulu; on the 10th instant. She goes right through to San Francisco. POET CHALMERS, 9th February. The Mikado arrived last night, having ; made the run in one hour less than five days, although detained seven hours in a fog on the coast. BLUFF, Bth February. A steamer was signalled on Sunday night, twelve miles to the westward. She is supposed to be the Mikado, from Sydney, bound for Dunedin. EUROPEAN SUMMARY. LONDON, 31st January. The wool sales have been postponed till the 17th February, Wheat, dropping ; America having made large shipments ; prices lower, Ist February. General Wolseley reached the Prah river on New Year's Day. An hour after his arrival, he was met by an ambassador from the King of Ashantee, asking for peace He refused to treat, except with the King himself at Coomassie. The ambassador re. turned. The Dutch forces have captured Kratow. Conservative candidates are opposing the return of Gladstone for Greenwich. John Bright, P. H. Muntz, and George Dixon, members for Birmingham, have been reelected without opposition. Forty-eight members have been elected, twenty being liberals. Eight liberals have been ousted by conservative candidates. In Spain the Carlists continue blockading Bilboa. General Galblenta has committed suicide.
