Witnesses for the defence state that the woman was dangerously violent, and jealous of another woman, and required restraint. TAURANGA, 23rd December. .The Native Minister returned last aight from his inland trip. He leaves for Napier in the, Lima at midnight.

It has been stated here on excellent [authority that Mr Bathgate will shortly retire ~ from the Ministry, and be appointed Resident Magistrate atr'Dunedin, in the place of Mr Chetbani-Strode. Mr O'Korke, it is tinderstood will become Minister of Justice. The Hon. Walter B. D. Mantell, M.L.C. is seriously ill. 24th December. All tenders for the erection of the new Government offices have been declined, on the ground that they are largely in excess of the Colonial Architect's estimate. CHRISTCHURCH, 24th December. The Good Templars have increased very rapidly in Christchurch, and contemplate erecting a hall costing £2OOO. ,' Three hundred and sixteen applications for nominated immigrants have been forwarded by the last English mail. GREYMOUTH, 23rd December. Mr Bonar, the candidate for the Superintendency of the Province of Westland, addressed the electors last night, and obtained a vote of confidence. DUNE DIN, 23rd December. The Standard Insurance Cmpany are now accepting risks. The number of shares applied for in Dunediu is 83,773. A number of risks were accepted to-day. The Governor anived overland this afternoon, having driven from Oamaru with Lady Ferguson. He was much impresssd with the beauty of the scenery. He was met at the Water of Leith by the Mayor and City Councillors, and an address was read, to which his Excellency made an extempore reply, wherein he thanked them for their considerate reception. He expressed himself as glad that he had come overland, and said that himself and Lady Ferguson were delighted with what they had seen. He hoped to remain some time in Dunedin, and see something of the working of its public institutions. A triumphal arch had been erected at the Octagon, and the GoY.rnor was loudly cheered when driving under it on his way to Government House, the Artillery at the same time tiring a salute. He will hold a levee to morrow, at the Provincial Council Chambers, 24th December. The Mayor lays the fouudation-stouo of the new Temperance Hall on Boxing Day. The number of nominations for free immigrants transmitted by mail to-day from Dunediu was 264. The Otago Sugar-reliuing Company is very popular, but a difficulty has arisen whether it should be a large or a small company. If it is decided to reduce the number of shareholders to fifteen or twenty, the required capital will be subscribed at once, and one partner will be sent to England by next mail to arrange for the plpnt and a skilled manager. A banquet to Mr Vogel is to be held in the University Hall.
