The feud is of old standing. Firearms have been used, and five or six natives tilled—four of them belonging to the Muanapoko tribe. Mr M'Lean is in direct communication with the parties. At Foxton a discharge of firearms has been heard, and crops have been destroyed. Mr Commissioner Booth and Mr Hector M'Donald started early for the scene of disturbance, and have not yet returned. Hunia left yesterday for Eangitilsci, and is expected back on Tuesday. Nothing further is known. 14th December. The Alhambra has arrived from the West Coast. News has arrived from Otaki that quiet has been restored at Horowhenua, Mr Commissioner Booth having succeeded in settling the dispute peaceably. No one has been killed, though a list of names of those alleged to have been killed had bceu forwarded to Wellington, 15th December. In the Horowhenua quarrel, after the disputants had agreed to refer the dispute to the Government, several of the disputants on both sides refused to recognize the arrangernent, and much bounce followed. Mr Booth slept in the Mauuapoko camp, and a number of shots were fired at his whare during the night. The Ngatiraukawa insist on the case being re-heard before the Native Lands Court. Bodies of armed natives are arriving, and the ferryman has been instructed not to cross natives carrying arms. Puke, the Ngatiraukawa chief, has challenged Mapoko to fight on Wednesday. Every precaution is being taken to preserve peace, and the Government expect to be able to do so. NELSON, 12th December. The Superiutendency returns are all in except for the districts of Lyell and Matakitaki. The numbers are, Curtis, 1,008; O'Conor, 1,241, William Gibbes has been returned to the House of Representatives for the district of Collingvvood, vice Mr Collins. CHRISTCHUKCH, 15th December. The crops are unusually promising ; but the harvest is likely to suffer in consequence of the great scarcity of labor. A new theatre is projected. Several subscriptions are being received for the interprovincial regatta. There is but little demaud for Standard Company shares. HOKITIKA, 12th December. The s.s. Alhambra has arrived.
