Thistle and Dog Acts.
'' Nemo me impune lacessit " is a motto which has long been connected witli the Scotch Thistle, and that it is a fitting one appears to have been exemplified in Auckland. "Old Colonial," in the Weekly News, says : (i The working of the Thistle Act does not seem to be a profitable source of revenue. The expenses incurred under it during the year amounted to £44 16s Gd, and the revenue derived only £1 2s 6d. It would be more profitable to let this source of revenue alone in the future. The working of the Dog Nuisance Act is far more profitable. Under this Act there were incurred expenses amounting to £ll2 lis 2d, and receipts amounting to £342 3s Id were obtsined, leaving a clear profit of £230 lis Id. If this Act were more strictly enforced, a much larger revenue would be derived from it. The working of the Impounding Act yielded a clear profit of £lO6 3s lOd, and if this Act were brought into operation throughout the whole province a much larger revenue would be obtained under this head."
