PRESENTING A TESTIMONIAL.
A writer in the Grahamstown Evening Star, says:—lt is not such a very long time, ago that a worthy man went from the Thames—almost stumped. He wanted credentials to carry with him to his new sphere of labor, but times were dull, and a want of appreciation was displayed by those who had benefited by the man's experience. For a consideration a valuable watch and chain were borrowed. A few friends and professed admirers were invited to be present at an interesting presentation, which invitation they accepted. One of the number kindly consented to make the presentation, and by bo doing lent himself tp apiece of harm-
less deception. Champagne was drunk at the expense of the presentee, and the watch was handed over—to be returned a few minutes later to the jeweller who had lent it. It is to be hoped that the departing guest reaped some benefit from the newspaper reports of the occurrence on the following day, but there are some people who would say he was a feol for not keeping his money in his pocket at the expense of taking his leave without a sham testimonial.
