To-day was observed as a close holiday. The Volunteers fired a feu dejoic in honor of the Prince oil Wales' birthday. The agricultural and horticultural exhibition was very .successful. Later. A conference of the Highway Hoard Chairman and the Colonist's Protection League have adopted resolutions affirming the necessity of the Government encouraging Colonial manufactures, in order to secure employment for immigrants. They recommended a protective tariff. The ship Countess of Kintorc has cleared with a large cargo. Colonel Harington, late Inspector of the Volunteers, is a passenger. Cattle are in large demand. Dairy cows, £ls 10s to £1(1 12s ; yearling steers, £2 10s to £3; three-year-olds, £6 us to £9 10s. There is a spirited demand for sheep. Lambs, 80s; a couple of store wethers, shorn, brought Ms 3d each.

The pioneer-vessel of the San Franeiseo line is advertised to leave Sydney vfit Kandavau and Honolulu on the 20th December. The Governor, Lady Ferguson, aud suite, were loudly cheered on their arrival, just before the first race. Derby stakes, £l5O, with a sweepstakes of £10; distance, 1J miles.—Mr Reiwood's Papapa, 1 ; Castaway, 2; Simpleton. 3. Mr "Walker's Defamer aud Dolly Varden also
ran. Papapa made the running, was never headed, and won by half a length. Time, 1 miuute 46 seconds.

Mr Noswortliy s Lurline, 1 ; Mr Hame's No Gentleman, 2; Mr Noswortliy's Hatred, 3 ; Mr Merritt's Phantom, 4. Mr Noswortliy declared to win with Lurline, which was a hot favorite. Lurline and Hatred made the running in company, after the first quarter-mile Lurline came away, winning easily, hard held, by ten lengths. No Gentleman passed Hatred near the post, and took the second place. Time, 1 minute 22 seconds. Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap, £lso> with sweepstakes of £lO, 2 miles. —Mr Kedwood's Kakapo, 3 yrs, 6st sft, 1 ; Mr Hutchinson's Malabar, 6st 101 b, 2; Mr Muloch's Gossip, 5 yrs, Bst 4ft, 3 ; Mr Kay's Tambourini, 5 yrs, 9st 81b; Mr Hutchinson's Mabel, 5 yrs, 7st 12ft; Mr Noswortliy's Traitor, scratched. Gossip made the running, Tambourini and Malabar close up for half-a-milc, when Tambourini went to the front' and held the lead until the straight, the rest close on her heels. Half down the straight Kakapo, hitherto the last, canic to the front, and won easily by six lengths. Time, 3 minutes 45 seconds.
Grand Stand Handicap, £IOO, 1 mile.— Mr Nosworthy's Calumny, -1 yrs, Ost 1211) ; Mr Redwood's Baiter, 3 yrs, Gat 101 b.; MiHewitt's Phantom, 5 yrs, 7st 121 b. Nominations; only,three acceptors. Calumny was a hot favorite; two. to one was laid on her; she won by four lengths with the greatest ease. Time, 1 minute 47-J seconds.
DUNE DIN, 12th November. The coal mine at Tokomairiro is in full work. It has been resolved to have water laid on at Port Chalmers. In the case of White v. M'Kellar, an action to recover £30,000, the hearing of which has occupied twelve hours, the Judge is now summing up. A rifle match has taken place between the Port Chalmers and Dunediu Naval Brigades. The Dunedin company were the victors.
