A Paris newspaper—the Figaro—warns its readers against placing too much confidence in the announcement of a hotel whose proprietor informs the public that " English, German, Italian, and Spanish aie spoken here." An Englishman, it says, who lately "descended " at the hotel in question, and could find no waiter possessing even the most rudimentary acquaintance with the English language, asked for the in terpreter, and being told that there was none, demanded an explanation, "By whom, then," he enquired, "are English, German, Italian, and Spanish spoken?" "By the travellers, sir, who come to I $e hotel," was the reply. !
