A new daily morning newspaper ha* been published in Hokitika, entitled the Westland Register. According to the nineteenth annual report of British Anti-Tobacco Societv, the sum of .£18,000,000 per annum was squandered on tobacco, " that enemy to health, that dishonor to the Creator, and that dcrogator from purity and sobriety," producing heart disease, insanity, paralysis, and diminishing the physical power of the population of both sexes. Smoking filled the whole workhouses, lunatic asylums, hospital*, and prisons, and was the *' chief factor of disease in the present day."
