Saturday, Dec. 21. Mr. Brogden's navvies, who had been at woik for the Provincial Government, struck work yesterday. They demand 7 shillings per day of 8 hours; their previous pay had been at the rate of 8 pence per hour, but they refused to work any longer on those terms. Tho work has been stopped, but will probably be resumed on Monday. The reason these navvies had been working for the Provincial Go-ernment, instead of for Mr Brogden, is because the decision of the General Government regarding ihe contracts for the Upper Hutt and Masterton lines has not given. If Mr Brogden's tenders are not accepted, the navvies will be senu toother parts of tho Colony. Mr Vogel is ill with the gout. Should his health permit, he intends to proceed to Melbourne per Rangitoto on Monday, to attend the Postal Conference. He will be attended by his secretary (Mr E Fox) and Mr Richardson.
