The Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1872.
Mails for Australia, via Melbourne, close at Greymouth at 5 p.m. to-inor-row (30th inst.) It is stated that an inquiry is about to be held into the recent disbanding of the Onehnnga HiHe Volunteers, a paragraph relating to which appeared in these columns a few days ago. The people of Motueka do not seem to think much of their representative, Mr Parker. At the hour at which he recently convened a meeting of his constituents, only 25 were present. No one took the trouble to question him, end with regard to the vote of thanks and confidence, the Nelson Examiner says;—"A few hands were held up in approval, and as no one dissented, the motion was declared to be carried." Referring to the sitting of the Native Lands Court, at Shorthand, and its bearink upon the opening of Ghinemuri, the Thames Advertiser says:—"For the present Court a number of blocks were set down for hearing, the claims being made by Rapata, Kiki Paka, and others Hio have always been the leaders of the opening party. If certificates of titles had been issued for these they would have been sold or leased, for deposits have been paid upon them by Europeans. However, in consequence, it appears, of a meeting held at Ohinemuri, the claimants appeared before the Court, and requested that the claims be withdrawn, and of course the Court had no alternative but to delete them from the list. It would appear from this that the power of Te Hira and those who act with him is stronger than ever, and those who wish to open the country dare not carry out their intention of dealing with their own land. So far, therefore, as respects Ohinemuri, the Native Lands Court has proved a failure, and worse, because we fear that not a few [Europeans, trusting to its notion, have advanced considerable sums to natives. "We must confess that wo do not now descry a ray of hope for the opening j of Qbinemuri. foi, a, considerable time to- come*'* I
