Wednesday, Nov. 27. No clue bas yet been obtained as to the cause of the lato fire. The agent of the Northern Insurance Company has made a present of books to the library of the Fire Brigade. Mr Hughes, bookseller, has also presented 53 volumes.
WELLINGTON.
Wednesday, Nov. 27. The new Public Hall, now in course of erection, has had a narrow escape from fiie. A plumber's boy accidentally put a light against the wall, setting fire to the scrim. The fire was extinguished before much damage had resulted.
AUCKLAND.
Wednesday, Nov. 27. An inquiry into the cause of the late five has resulted in an open verdict being returned. A rider was added, expressive of disapprobation regarding the use of naked candles in flax stores, and also of dissatisfaction with the position and condition of the fire brigades in this city. In the Provincial Council the Education Bill has passed its second reading.
