The s.s. Star of the South, Captain F. Holmes, left Auckland at 3 30 p.m. on Wednesday, 13th inst.; had light and variable winds crossing the Biy of Plenty. Was off the East Cape at midnight on Thursday, when a strong southerly gale was experienced, with a heavy sea. Bore up for shelter, and anchored at Kawa Kawa. Resumed her voyage at 11 a.m. on Friday; rounded the East Cape at noon ; was off Portland Island at 9 a.m. yesterday, and ariived here at 4 p.m. From the East Cape to port had a light head viind and heavy sea. Cargo : 25G pieces timber, 1 bull, 1 horse, and 30 tons general. —The Star will steam for Auckland direct at 9 a.m. to morrow. The cutter Dawn took her departure for Poverty Bay yesterday, with a geueral cargo. The schooner Hero will probably sail for Wairoa to-night. The schooner Columbia, from Napier via Poverty Bay, arrived at Auckland or: the 12th inst, with 146 bales wool and 2 tons nails,
Tne C.G. p.s. Lima, from the Bay of Islands, arrived at Tauranga at 5 o'clock last evening, and left for Napier at 11 a.m. this day. The ship Robert Henderson was to have left Auckland fur this part on Saturday last. At the usual weekly meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society, held on the 6th inst., a paper was read by Capf. Edwin, R.N., on some causes that lead to gerious errors in ship's compasses that are not usually taken into account, in which he showed that an iron ship " swung " in Auckland ar.d at the Bluff would show very different compass errors, even to the extent of being one mile out in every five on certain courses. He pointed out from experience on the Luna, that steel vessels are not liable to the same extent of erChairman (Dr. Hector) remarked on the great practical importance of the subject, aud hoped the author would be ap!e to suggest some practical steps to be taken for the protection of the public, With the late Mr Balfaur he had goue into the question a little on the occasion of the loss of the City of £>uuedin, and certain errors were discovered in the cards of correction in the possession of sorne coasting steamers, that may jn pa t be due to the causes pointed out iy Cant.
