[FBOM THE AN&LO-AFSTEALIAN BBKSa TELEafIAM AGENCY.] WELLINGTON. Wreck of the barque " City of Newcastle." SIX FEMALE PASSENGERS MISSING. Saturday, Nov. 16. The barque City of Newcastle, which left Wellington for Newcastle on the 9th inst., has been wrecked at Wellington Head, near Ficton. The captain and twenty of the crew were picked up by the s.s. Taranaki. A boat containing six females is still missing. The passengers were Mr and M re J. G. Fox; Mr Abbott, Armed Constabulary ; Mrs J. H. J. Pilcher; Mrs and Master Jones; Miss Cameron. The Taranaki returned to the scene of the disaster, but found no remains of the vessel. The Rangatira has gone to. the rescue INVERCARGILL. Saturday, Nov. 16. The steamer Wallabi entered the river yesterday, and was moored at the new jetty. When the tide receded she lay amidships on a sand hummock, and broke her back. Her sides are also giving way. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning- there was one civil case— Lewis v. Rush —a judgment summons. The present defendant was plaintiff'in. the case Rush v. Lewis, which was given against him yesterday; and the present action was brought to recover £1 18s, the amount of costs in that case—the plaintiff stating that Rush was about to leave for Wairoa in the Hero, which only awaited a change of weather. Defendant's counsel argued that the action was. of a vexatious character; but the Court thought differently, and gave judgment for the amount claimed, with costs 3* 6<l. In the course of the proceedings defendant's council intimated that his client had taken the preliminary steps to bring an action against the plaintiff in the Supreme Court. Capt. Lewis slated that it had already cost him about £2O to defend thi< action for Jgs, brought against him by Rni»h. He had to get another man to take command of his vessel to Auckland, and would have to. follow it in a steamer : losing altogether a month's time. We learn from the Evening Post that the new quarantine buildings on Soames' Island, Wellington, are progressing favorably, and it is expected they will be completed by the end of the year. At a recent rifle match at Grahamstown, Volunteer Partington made 6,9 points out of a possible 84—-the ranges being 400, 500, and 600 yards, seven shots at each. Mr Elliot, acting on behalf of the Kansas and Pacific Railway Company, has been experimenting with trees, in order to ascertain the practicability of raising forest trees on the great plains, and by their influence securing a change in the climate so as to make the country rich and fruitful. It is stated that his experiments have proved highly satisfactory, The number of beggars in New York is reported to be increasing at an alarming rate. Terrific forest fires have been raging in Oregon, U.S. 294,000,000,000 cigarettes are annually smoked in France.. The story of the two trombones is a good one. One night a trombone player wished to absent from the orchestra; and as there was another trombone, instead of asking leave of the conductor, he resorted to the expedient of getting a friend to go and take his seat. " Watch the other trombone," said he to his friend; " puff out your eheeks well, keep your lingers active, look alive, and you will pass muster." All went well until a passage for two trombones was reached.. Not a sound from the instruments ! It turned out that both the trombone players had resortoij. to the sajne ruse..
