At Qveer\ Island, near Dnuedin, a shaft is being sunk some 200 feet in order to reach a seam of coal which it is proposed to woi k. Reviewing the past session, the Canterbury Press says:—"Of anv large measure for the material progress or good government of the colony, the session has been absolutely bairen. The only palpable results are, that Messrs Fox, Gisborne, Ormond, and Reeve*, have given place in the Ministry to Messrs Waterhouse, O'Rorke, Richardson and Bathgate; and that it has been admitted that cir railways will cost £1,000,000 more thm had been expected. They must be thankful for very small mercies who see anything here on which either the Assembly or the country is to be congratulated." It is woi thy of notice, says the Otago Witness, that now for the first time Mr Vogel admits that Mr M'Lean would be the better of advice in his administration of native affairs. Hitherto it has been dinned into our ears that Mr M'Lean was the only man in New Zealand who could manage the natives, and that, he must have carte blanche given him to do as he liked. we find he is to bo associated with a lot of Maoris, who of couise will not give their services for nothing. Therefore, either Mr M'Lean is now obliged to admit that lie cannot manage the natives without aid, or else the appointments about to be made are useless, and are simply meant to buy support.
