Thursday, Oct. 24. In the House of Representatives last night, the IJawke's Bay Rivers Act Amendment Bill was passed.

Respecting Kelly's claims the Government promised to confer with the Provincial authorities and announce their decision next session.

In reply to Mr Sheehan, the Government promised to consider, during the recess, a measure defining the powers of the Assembly and of Provinces. With reference to the Chairmanship of Committees, the Government withdrew their canJidate, Mr J. E. Brown, and asked the House to postpone the consideration of the subject until they should propose another. This, however, the House refused to do, and Carried an amendment, moved by Mr Swanson, "That it is not desirable to elect a Chairman of Committees till next session." On this matter the present Ministry has sustained its first defeat. Mr Vogel, when announcing the withdrawal of Mr Brown, asked for time. The Jlouse cried " No, no." Mr Swanson sien his amend ment. The voices being in favor of it, Mr Vogel calleJ upon the House to divide, but Mr Fox persuaded him to withdraw his call for a division.

Parliament will be prorogued to-
