Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1872.

Jn the Resident Magistrate'.* Court this morning P. Cosgrove wa« charged under the Police Act by Sergt Farmer with having a lire in a dangerous place at the rear of his premises, Hastingsstreet. The lire it appeared, was for washing purposes, and the opinions of witnesses differed as to its danger.— The Magistrate considered the charge made out, and inflicted a fine of 10*, ♦he minimum penalty, with 5s 6d costs.

The Presbytery of Sydney met in that city on the Bth inst., and was constituted with prayer by the Rev. James Cash, M.A , Moderator. The Rev. Adam Thomson introduced to the Presbytery the Rev. George Morice, of Napier, Now Zealand. The Auckland papers announce that the Biiuk of New Zealand has determined to make a ieduction in their rates of business throughoit the Colony. A Southern contemporary states that Mr Brogden is not prepared to give employment (o all the men he imported to Pic ton. The married men are kept on, but the unmarried have been dismissed. The reason assigned is, that materials are not ready to proceed with the railway. In the House of Representatives, on October 16, in reply to a question from Mr O'Connor, the Hon. Mr Vogel said the Government did not intend to appoint a Minister of Mines.

From the Thames we learn that the rifle match between fifteen persons born in New Zealand and u like number of Scotchmen took place on the 12th inst., and resulted in a victory for the Colonials. The ranges were 400, 500, and 600, yards, 7 shots at each ian"e. The following were the scores : —Colonials, 747; Scotchmen, 736. Efforts are being made at Queenstown (Otago) to form a company to establish a woollen factory in the Lake district.
