THE COMING ELECTION.

TO THE EDITOR O? THE HAWKE'S BAY TIMES. Sir,—As we generally agree in politics, will you allow me in your paper to explain how I cannot support Mr Colenso as you do ? In the first place, I have always been a consistent opponent of paid officials, of Superintendents and Government asking the people to keep them in power, the better to enable them to divide the public money amongst their ain selves. Any one that has been in the Council or studied the votes of last session, must know that Mr Colenso was the obedient mate of Mr. Qrmond, voting too much for Porangahau, or anything Mr Ormoiid wanted. Rumor says that Mr Colenso will be worth more in the Heretannga affair. "But," some will say, "what about Mr Newton and contracts?" There is no thanks to any one for a fail ami open contract. If all the jobs and billets in the Colony had been given in that way, they could have hem done at far less money, and no word of pensions to jthe humble and obedient recipients; likewise the Colony from the corrupt position it is in. No one holding my views can with a good conscience vote for Mr Colenso, knowing that he has been such a placehunter, thereby spoiling his usefulness, and helping on that which should be uucjone.— I am, &c, John Begg. Napier, Oct. 14, 1872.
