The Returning Officer, on Saturday, announced that the polling on Thursday next would begin at 9 a.m. and close at 4 p.m. Napier time. He explained that when a particular hour was fixed in any statute, mean solar time in the place referred to whs invariably intended unless otherwise expressed. The polling would, therefore, Ibegin about }5 minutes to 9 by telegraph or New Zealand mean time. In another column appears a letter from a Napier elector, Mr John Begg, getting forth his reasons for opposing Mr Oolenso a* a candidate for the Provincial Council. Mr Colenso during last session, be says, " was the obedient lnate of Mr Ormond." A similar charge has been made before, but we have not as yet seen any specific fact urged in illustration of the statement. We have shown a clear instance to the contrary, and any one who watched last session's proceedings must have noticed how distasfeful to the Superintendent was Mr Colenso's opposition to some pf the provisions of the Special Settlement regulations. On the subject of contracts. Mr segg says : " There is no thanks to any one for a fair and open contract." Certainly not; bub the objection to a salaried officer as a member of Council applies with equal force to a pontractor, and still mote forcibly to a person interested indirectly in provincial contracts. In Saturday's issue an awkward typographical error appeared in our reniarks on the Spirituous Liquors Bill. In the last line fyut one of the first column, not to allude" should read "suppose us to allude." In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning a man named Shaw, recently arrested at Wellington on a charge of ciiminal assault committed at Waipawa, was brought up and remanded to Friday. We have received the fjrsl number of our new contemporary—the Poverty Bay Standard. It is creditably printed on a demy sheet, and bears evidence of some of the difficulties usually attending the issue of a first number. It has the clear and pleasant appearance always seen in papers printed from new type.
