Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1872.
"VVe are informed by Mr. Fannin that only two of (he Scandinavian single girls remain unengaged. This afternoon, about 3.30, a hoi bo with a loaded cart was standing opposite Messrs. Rohjohn's store, when the animal suddenly took flight, and galloped up Waghorn-street, leaving boxes, packages, &o , behind him in his course. He turned up on the beach near the London Hotel, when his further progiess was stayed by the capsize of the cart. Beyond the slight alarm occasioned, and the breaking of some boxes of goods, no damage was done.
From this evening's telegrams it will be seen that two of our evening contemporaries are threatened with actions for libel. In view of surrounding social abuses it is difficult for a newspaper to fulfil its duty in an independent manner, and at the same time avoid prosecutions of this kind.
As we go to press, there is every appearance of rain, which is much required, both in town and country.
There was one civil case in the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning : —Sutton v. Chase, a claim of .£lB for goods supplied, with interest.—Judgment for the amount claimed, with £1 14s, co&ts.
