Pawn, cutter, for Poverty Bay, tonight TgE s.s. Star of the South, Capt. Holmes, steamed hence at 9.30 this morning, for the Thames and Auckland, with 56 head cattle and 340 sheep. The ship Hovding took her departure at 11 o'clock this forenoon, for Callao, with original cargo from Christiania. Referring to the s.s. Napier, the Wellington Independent, Sept. 18, says : ft This smart little steamer has been laid up for the last ten days undergoing some alterations and repairs. The poop deck-house has been placed on the main deck, which relieves the vessel from any hampered appearance, and gives more space for passengers on the quarter-deck. In the oabin the position of the stairs has been altered, and a snug room with ample space for four ladies has been made—it is filled with every convenience. We have no hesitation in saying that this steamer will be profitable to her enterprising owners, and will become a favorite with the travelling community. The vessel has been fitted with a new screw shaft and' propeller, and the boiler and engines have undergone a complete overhaul, which has been done by Mr Mills, Lion Foundry." The same journal, of the 21st in3t., says; ? ' The steamer Napier made a trial trip round the harbor on Thursday afternoon last. She left the Queen's Wharf at 4.3 Q p.m., and steamed round Soames' Island. The machinery worked smoothly, and, at a pressure of 401b3 steam, averaged S£ knots per hour, the engine making 110* revolutions per minute. She returned to wharf at 5.40 p.m., all on board being satisfied with the working of her machinery and the satisfactory manner in which Mr Mills had completed his work. The Napier sailed at seven o'clock last ni_,ht for Manawatu, with a-fiill cargo and a number of passengers."
