During the previous year the exports were 35,964,271 lbs. Attention is directed by a correspondent of a Nelson paper to a " simple satety lamp" recently invented at home. He considers it may be of service, to. miners, and describes it thus : "Take a phiaj bottle of the whitest glass you can find. Insert a piece of phosphorus of the size of a pea. Pour upon the phoKphoms as. much boiling oil as will fill one-third of the phial. Cork the phial so as to exclude all air. This is the .safety lamp. When it is required, open the phial to admit the atmospheric air, immediately re corking ifc. The lamp is light, and will give at least as much light as an ordinary miner's lantern. When the lamp becomes dim, merely open the phial for an instant, carefully re-stopping it, and repeat the operation when required. It is said that these safety lamps last for six months without further trim ming." The above so-called "recent invention" may be found fully described in books of philosophical recreation published fifty years ago. We had one of these " safety lamps " in use more than thirty years ago, to enable us to see the time at night by an ordinary, watch, which it will show if brought pretty close to the watchface. The light given off is about equal to that of a bright glow-worm. Major B. L. Green has been appointed Sub-Immigration Officer for Auckland. The Waikato Times is informed that forty out of the first consignment of breach-loading Snider carbines received by the New Zealand Government are now in transitu from Wellington to the Waikato. Twenty are to be forwarded respectively to the To Awamutu and Cambridge Cavalry Corps to he given to the twenty best marksmen in each troop. This prompt action on the part of the Government shows that they aie alive to the necessity of arming the frontier corps with the very best weapons obtainable. The Thames Advertiser says :—" The Ministry is reported to be * safe' for the session. Those who know JVI r Stafford and his present colleagues could never for a moment have entertained a doubt on. the subject. The Opposition, it ia true, endeavored to frighten Mr Stafford into coalition, but he probably saw his position to be safe without taking Mr Vogel into his camp. The truth is, the Ministry is really a strong one, and should it be successful in its policy, will be likely to draw around it a numerous following.* 1
