Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1872. GOVERNMENT PATRONAGE.

The return of amounts paid to news papers for printing and advertizing by the late Government, during the year 1871-2, which we give in another jsolumn, bears put in a remarkable degree the charges of abuse of patronage brought against them. The simple statement of figures fails to show the full advantage derived by the favored journals, as, all other things being equal, a paper containing Government advertisements has obviously a great advantage in the way of public support pver one without them. The complete return discriminates between printing and advertising, but we have merely given the columns of totals. The amounts paid to tlie Hawke's Bay journals are distributed as follows :

r—This is abouL in proportion to the support accorded to the Government. [Perhaps the most glaring instances are those of Nelson and Taranaki. The Nelson Ejxaminer, the oldest paper in the Colony, and without exception the best conducted, received .£(3B 14s, yvjiile the Colonist, a paper conducted with considerable ability, but inferior ip every respect to the Examiner, and a Staunch supporter of the late Ministry, received -#482 \§b Bd. In Taranaki,

tho smallest province in the Colony, £214 10s 7d was spent in printing and advertising,—a.* much, within 6s, as in Hawke's Bay, a far more important province—and the whole of this large sum, with the exception of ,£lO lis 7d, fell to the share of the Herald—the other paper, the News, being in no way its inferior, but an opponent of the late Ministry.

Printing, Advertising. Herald.... ..£30 10 0 £104 16 3 Tiroes .. 17 5 6 3 18 6 Telegraph. .. 58 6 6
