The Annual Report of the Inspector pf Militia and Volunteers, which has been laid before both Houses of Parliament, has come to hand. With reference to "Volunteer inspections, we find the following under the headiDg «< Province of Hawfce's Bay :"—"Thi* Province contains one Qavalry, one .Artillery, and two Bifle porps, amounting tq il4 men. The Wairoa Rifles drjlle4 fairly. Tn.consequen.ce of their exposed position, they have been armed with Snider, rifles; and special prizes were set apart for competition between fliis corps and Poverty Bay Rifles, who, are similarly armed. The Hawke's Bay Cavalry mustered well at inspec tioUj, but require more consecutive training; they have, however, no p.ther instructor than their qwu, officers. I regret to be unable to report improvement in the Artillery corps, since last year; but they also labor under the disadvantage Qt having no thorqughl> qualified instructor. Mails for Australia close at Hokitika at 4 p.m. to-morrow (Thursday, 12th instant). Telegrams will he received at Napier till 2 p.nj. His Excellency the (governor has been pleased to accept the resignation of Assistant-Surgeon J. M. Gibbes, of the Armed Constabulary Force.
