The Hawked Bay portion of the English Mail via San Francisco came to hand this morning by the steamer Keera, from the North.
The debate on Mr Stafford's "no confidence" resolutions would be resumed in the House of Representatives this afternoon.
Mails for the United Kingdom, &c, via San Francisco, close at- Auckland at 9.30 a.m. on Thursday, sth inst.
Mails for A'isiralia and the United Kingdom close at the Bluff at 10 am on Thursday next, sth inst. The steamer Albion, from Melbourne, with the English Mail via Suez, arrived at the Bluff at 7 o'clock last night.
Til the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, there was only one case, Noagle v. Meihana, a 'claim of .£l3 Is 6d. Mr Lascelles, for the defendant, disputed several of the hems, including the first in the bill, an old balance of 10s 6d, and the item 16s 6d imerest. Some of the charges he objected to as excessive; for instance, a box of can die.-, £1 17s 6d. In answer to Mr. Lascelles, plaintiff stated that it was his practice to charge natives a higher credit price than Europeans, as he found it more difficult to collect the money.—The Resident Magistrate said he could not go into the question whether the price was reasonable or otherwise ; the defendant's remedy against high prices would be to deal elsewhere The item 10s 6d balance, must be dis allowed, not having been proved, and he would not allow the interest, as it appeared that the plaintiff had made sufficient provision in this respect in the first charge for the articles.—Judgment for £ll 14s 6d, with .£1 7s costs.
Newcastle coal is selling in Auckland at 55s per ton.
With reference to the Auckland live stock marker, Messrs. Hunter & Nolan report as follows for the week ending 23id August:—" Cattle : A fair number have been brought forward, and good demand has existed for most descriptions. Dairy cows were rather heavy heavy of sale at late quotations ; good well-bred stores in fresh condition are in request, those adapted for fattening purposes especially. There was an average muster of fat beasts, and steady demand at 30s per 1001 b. Sheep : The Newmarket pens were tolerably well filled on Tuesday, and some very good framed sheep were submitted for sale, and if in a little battel condition would have commanded high figures. Those tit for the. butcher sold at from 23s to 28s 6d each, while the graziers purchased at from 20s to 21s 3d."
Among the fossils discovered in the cliffs at Patagonia by the Agassiz exploring expedition were oysters a foot in diameter.
