THE NEW LICENSING BILL m COMMITTEE.
The Wellington correspondent of the New Zealand Herald writes thus, under date 7th August:— In the House of Representatives, yesterday, there was a sharp fight over the Permissive Bill. The permissive clause was lost on a division, and a discussions ensued as to whether the bill should be proceeded with. The promoters iasisted on pressing the bill. The petitions in favor of an amendment of the licensing laws were sufficient to justify them. The whole principle of the bill was gone over again. During this part of the proceedings the Colonial Treasurer made an unprovoked and ungenetous attack on the Premier. He was anxious to refer the bill, w ith that of the publicans,, to a select committee. Mr Gillies administered a well merited rebuke to Mr Yogel, in which ho was sustained by the whole House. Mr Macandrew moved that the Chairman do leave the chair. The effect of this motion would be, if carried, thai, the bill would lapse. A division was called for, when it was rejected by a majority of 32 to 28. On the motion of Mr Creighton progress 'vas reported, and leave asked to sit again. On the House resuming the contest was renewed. Mr Creighton moved that the bill he recommitted next sitting day, to which Mr Yogel moved an amendment that it be com* mitted that day six months.
