to violate his engagement I * ith the Government. On the 11th March the St. Kilda left Napier for the West Coast without the reinforcement, and Ropata and his party returned to their homes. In the words of the Hawke's Bay Herald of the period —then, as now, chief trumpeter to the great Maori Empiric—" Mr. M'Lean, as General Government agent, saw fit to arrest the hand of his official superiors." He was, of course, deprived of his office, and this Jittle incident in his career is enough to show Mr Stafford that he might prove a thorn in the side of any Government in which he had no voice.
We are glad to learn, however, that Mr M'Lean has distinctly asserted his determination not to hold office under Mr Staffoid. His refusal to do so can but delay for a brief period the end of the reijjn of ihe administiation, and it will be far better to submit to this delay—if it prove to be occasioned by his refusal—than to effect such a compromise as would be involved in the acceptance of office by him in anew Ministry.
