Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. MONDAY, AUGUST 19, 1872.
Jn the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, one drunkard was fined five shillings. The first .sod of the Hutt railway was to have been turned to-day. From the New Zealand Gazette, 3rd insfc., we learn that all the native re serve at Waikokopu, known as Ihaka Whanga's Reserve, and lying in the Nuhaka and Kopu Whare Blocks, and containing 693 acres and 37 perches, has, bv consent of the aboriginal inhabitants entitled to the said piece or parcel of land, been brought under the operations of " The Native Reserves Act, 1856." A Notice to Mariners in the New Zealand Gazette defines the true latitude of Cape Turnagain, on the East Coast of the North Island, to be 10 deg. 29 min. and 47 sec. S., instead of 40 deg. 22 min, S-, as given in the New Zealand Pilot. The differences of longitude agree so nearly that it is unnecessary to refer to them until the Trigonoinetrial Survey is complete. This notice affects the following Admiralty Charts, viz : General Chart, Sheet IV.; also New Zealand Pilot, pp. 104, 106, and 286. Enquiries having been made respecting a person named Samvel Aldwell, who is said to have served in the 2nd "Waikato Regiment some six or seven years ago, but of whom no trace cau ■\\ow be found, anyone who can give any information respecting him is requested to gommuni.ca.fe with the Colonial Secretary's Office., Wellington,
Meetinas for the formation of trade societies appear to be the order of the day in the Province of Auckland. Within the last few weeks a bakers', a blaoksmiths', and a bootmakers' societyhave been formed, in which the journeymen of each trade have resolved themselves into a league for the protection of their individual interests, and the interests of their respective callings ; and from our latest files we learn that the preliminary steps have been taken towaids the formation of a typographical society. In answer to several correspondents, the Evening Post states that the total number of shares in the South British Insurance Company applied for in Wellington is 4,524. The allotment will take place when the returns ai e re r ceivecl from the Wanganui and Napier agents. A Blenheim paper "regrets to learn that out of the number of men who recently arrived in Picton to the railway, that some twenty or thirty appear to be of a very low moral character, and that their conduct is calculated to bring discredit on the whole body, although the majority are sober and well-conducted men." The local Justices of the Peace have had a busy time with i hese gentry, one of whom, has been committed to jail for two months, for knocking a man down and smashing his head with a stone. Auckland papers of Tuesday last (the latest to hand) contain the following sharemarket quotations :- Caledonian, £27 to £2B; Thames, M 2s 6d ; Mo anatairi, £6 17s 6d ; Tokaiea, £3 : Alburnia, £2 10s; Golden Calf, £2 10; Bismark, £2 15s; Cure, £1 18s; Otago, £1 Is; Inverness, 12s; Peep o' Day, 8s; Pride of Tokatea, 5s 6d ; Red Queen, ss; Golconda, 12s. After relating the dismal story of Tasmania, the Diinedin Echo says ; " But the history of no colony lias any lesson for us; so long as we can borrow we will be extravagant. Indeed, our chil service ha* so overgrown as to exceed all due proportions. We pay in salaries more than a pound per head, of the population—man, woman and child. Still che service increases. Not content with Inning railways, immigration, life assurance, telegraphs, &c, under their management, the Government desire to have a public trustee appointed, so as to get rid of one of their followers by promotion to this office.. But enough. It is at present hopeless to point out our govermental evils. A people that can allow the present Ministty to remain in power is unfitted for representative institutions." The Otago Daily Timfs publishes extraets from a piivate letter received from a passenger from Dunedin to San Francisco by Webb's line, showing that the service is a mo«t miserable abortion. In this letter the following passage occurs :—The system of enticing people from New Zealand in their " fine si earners," and afterwards in such rotten boais, is a disgrace, and oaght to be exposed. If I could handle the pen properly, I would allow my indignation to boil over. The service is rotten, and should be held up as a warning to the unwary. The Thames Advertiser of a late date sa ys Foot, of Bridgewater Farm, on whose ground the Maremaru coalfield has been discovered, writing to a gentleman in Grahamstown, states that he has made another discovery of coal at the water level. He says this ends all doubts as to Mr Carig's competency as a judge, that gentlemau haviug some time ago made a visit to the district, and advised Mr Fool of the best means to adopt in seaiching for coal; at the same time pointing out the best positions on which to commence operations. The thickness of the seam he estimates at twenty feet, as he has sunk through it sixteen feet, with no appearance of bottom ; and the men having broken all their picks were unable to proceed. Several gentlemen had been to see the vein, and pronounced \evy highly in its favor; one gentleman of great expe rience stating that it was one of the best discovered in New Zealand. Mr Foot also states that he is about to send over a few bags of the coal to have it tried for blacksmiths' use, and says that this last opening proves that there is a verv large of coal in the vicinity.
