Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, 1872.
Mails for Australia and the United Kingdom close at Auckland on Monday next, 19th inst, at 12.20 p.m. Telegrams intended for transmission by this opportunity will be received at the Spit office till 10.20 a.m. The Rev. E. Taylor will (D.V.) conduct Divine seivice in the Methodise Chapel, Napier, tomorrow (Sunday, J Bth inst.,) both morning and evening —being the first anniversary of the opening of thp United Methodist Free Church in this town.
All friends of temperance will be pleased to learn that the Permissive Bill recently introduced into the Vic toriau Parliament has passed its second reading by a large majority. We are indebted for th.i« gratifying information to a Melbourne telegram in this morning's Herald. The Supreme Court, though formally adjourned till to-day, did not sit, and the business of the assize is now completed. The object of the adjournment to this morning was to consider the case of a prisoner (commonly known as Te Kooti's butcher) confined in the Napier jail without legal warrant. The informality, however, was corrected yesterday, when Mr Inspector Scully procured a warrant for the prisoner's apprehension, took him before the Resident Magistrate's Court, and re-con signed him to the jail upon a proper warrant of commitment. It U reported that a special sitting of the Supreme Court will probably be held to try the prisoner in question, upon the arrival of the necessary witnesses, who may be shortly expected. We have to thank Mr. 0. E feeble, purser of the s.s. I£eeia, for delivery of Auckland tiles and other favors.
