Commercial Intelligence.

WELLINGTON. The Wellington Independent of Saturday last reports : The town trade has been quiet during the past month, with no transactions of any magnitude to report. With the country trade the reverse has been the case, and orders have come in to a considerable extent. We cannot, however, report any improvement in prices, most of the business being done at an exceptionally low scale of profit which leaves but a small margin to importers. The arrivals of the Excelsior, the Schiehallion, and the Halcione from London during the month have fully supplied our market for present requirements with mostly every description of imported goods, with the exception of corrugated iron, of which there is none in stock. Sugars have moved off freely at an advance of 20s to 40s per ton, and the quantity in hand has fallen below the usual average. Teas have been in good inquiry, especially for the finer sorts, of which our stock is light. In flour and grain a good business has been done and supplies have come in freely. Canterbury flour, which has ruled from 414 to iU4 10s per ton during tire month, shows symptoms of giving way, owing to the quantities coming in. In feeding grains, oats con- < tinue low in value and cannot be quoted j higher than 2s 9d to 33 per bushel. Butter in kegs has advanced in value and sales are reported at 9d and lOd per lb for prime cure.
