Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addict us jurare in verba magistri. MONDAY, JULY 29, 1872.
In the Resident Magistrate's* Court, this morning John Franklin was Lined 7> 6*l for non attendance at parade. Tlie fine bad been previously imposed, but on the defendant refusing to pay, a defect was discovered iu the information, which prevented further proceedings being taken. Respecting an accident to the CG. p.s. Luna, a Lyttelton telegram, dated July 24, supplies the following particulars :—The Luna armed outside under canvas. When 110 miles from port she broke down, the air pump rod giving way ; other injuries have also been sustained. As the wind was unfavorable, the ss. Halcyon went down and towed her up to an anchorage. The repairs will occupy some days. As a curious example of the mistakes sometimes made in the reading of telegrams we quote the following published as New Zealand news via Melbourne in the Sydney Herald :—" A horrible outrage has been committed at Poverty Bay on Mrs Hardy, Dr Pearson, and Akaroa. They were found dead in the bush staik naked." The nomination of candidates for the vacant seat in the Hou*e of Represen tatives, i'av the Jleathcote district, is fixed to take place on the 30th inst (to-morrow); the poll (if necessary) on the 2nd August It is expected that Sir J. CracVoft Wilson, C. 8., K.C.5.1., will be the only candidate.
The small-pox scare seems to have extended itself simultaneously over the whole of the Australasian colonies. In several of the eases whioh have terminated fatally it is to he remarked that the persons were living in a crowded lodging bou«e, and had ne* er been vaccinated. Latest news informs us that the alarm was abating, although strict precautions were still being observed. A fatal case occurred an board the s.s. Hero, the man's name was SutclifTe, and it transpired that he had stayed at ihe Dining rooms in Auckland, where Thompson was living. A medical man writes to the Sydney Herald, however, that he has attended small-pox patients for the last three months in that city. In Honolulu, from our papers per .Nebraska, we learn that small-pox is raging, as also in some of the eastern cities of the Union, and in Dublin. A contemporary says :—Totting up the New Zealand Army List we arrive v.t the respectable grand total of 939 "officer.? and gentlemen " whose name* are immortalised in the Colonial Hart. If mav offer a suggestion- to the di>tinguished military authorities who rule ti e destinies of this noble army of captains, we would lecommend a searching investigation into this list. If 198 captains require 31 surgeons, how many lieutenant colonels are necessary for 186 lieutenants I —a iule-of three sum which will tax even our local schoolmaster's mathematical abilities.
