During the three years ending upon the ?»I>6 of March last, the Otago Pro vincial Government expended .£4,012 10* 5d in law expenses. In the House of Representees, on July 16, Mr R. J. Creighton presented a petition, signed by 2400 inhabitants, of Auckland, and 74 Upper Wangaroa, in fa\or of the Permissive Bill. He said that a statutory declaration could be made in favor of signatures. A fatal accident occurred at the Bay of Islands a few days ago. It appears that a man named Archibald Campbell* a shoemaker, formerly of Auckland, who was employed at the mines, had lain down on the rails of the tramway, and whilst in that position was run over by a train of wagons and instantly killed, the driver of the locomotive being unable to stop in time to avert the accident. "Deceased leaves a widowed mother and one sister. The loss of the trading schooner Eagle, Cajtt. Bird, and the massacre of the captain and ci-ew, by Solomon Island natives, is reported. The crew is said to have consisted of six men. The schooner was engaged in trading with the natives of thosejslanda. News of the loss of the schooner was received by Cap! ain Green, of the schooner Fannie Hare, lately arrived from Batavia. On the ISrh ol April be spoke the barque Midas. The captain of the Midas reported that the Eagle, with her crew, had been cut oft' by the nati\ of the Solomon Islands and murdered. The news was given l»y the mate of the Midas, who was sent on board the Fannie "Hare and made this report, which gives it more the appearance of being well founded.
