PORANGAHAU.
WRECK OF THE SCHOONER ALICE. Just as we were going to press this afternoon, we received intimation of" the receipt, of a telegrem by Messivv Stuart & Co., stating that the fore-and-afl schooner Alice, G. Scoqnes, master,, which left this port on rhe^3rdinst. t . with a cargo of station stores for Poramrahau, had been wrecked at that place, and that the cargo was being discharged. These, we believe, are alt the particulars that are to hand regardinar the unfortunate occurrence. The telegram received by Stuart & Co. is dated " Porangahau, July. 17," but the day on which the wreck occurred is not mentioned.
The Bendigo Gully correspondent of the Cromwell Argus writes:—An interesting relic of our Maori predecessors in this valley was found by two young men searching for eggs in a cave at the back of Wakefield. After crawling some distance through the narrow aperture the cavern suddenly widened out to a good size, and standing against the side they found a Maori paddle. It is neatly finished, is in an excellent state of preservation, and appears to be. made of Kauri pine; and, as T am not aware that any of the wood grows in this island, a vide field of conjecture is opened as to how it may havo got into the locality in which it was found. Possibly further research may reveal the remains of its grim owner. 1 have occasionally seen pounamns and other stone implements turned up in the auriferous drifts of Bendigo Gully, indicating the distHct as being an ancient habitat of the Maori and the moa.
