AUCKLAND.
DEATH OF THE SMALL-POX PATIENT AT THE HOSPITAL. The Daily Southern Cross, June 25, says:—We are informed that Mr Henry Thompson, who went to the Hospital a short time ago suffering from smallpox, expired on Sunday morning. When the nature of Thompson's complaint was ascertained he was at once isolated from all other patients and every precaution taken to prevent the ■communication of infection. Dr Philson attended him, and all that care and skill could do was bestowed upon the patient, who appeared to be progressing; satisfactorily until Sa t urday, when a decided change for the worse took place, and the sufferer continued to sink, until Sunday at two o'clock, when he died. The body was at once placed in a coffin and screwed down, and was buried at four o'clock the same afternoon. That the case should have terminated so unfortunately is much to be regretted, but we believe, from the precautions taken by Dr Philson, with this case will cease the existence of variola in Auckland, unless again introduced from some other source. It is said that the deceased had acquired a considerable sum of money on the Otago goldfields, and was proceeding to Australia to join his family, who'reside there, when he was overtaken by the disease, which delayed him in Auckland, and has since terminated fatally. [Since the date of the paper containing the above, telegrams have been received in Napier stating that two more cases of small-pox had occurred in Auckland —one of them being in the Hospital.]
