On JMday last, the day appointed for Colonel Whitmore's appearance at the Resident Magistrate's Court, the case was called, but in the absence of the necessary information from Wanganui, was indefinitely adjourned. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, there was one case of drunkenness. The offender was charged by Constable Murrylees with drunkenness and resisting the police. It appeared that on being taken in charge, he violently resisted the constable, and spoiled his tunic. The accused admitted the drunkenness, having been enjoying himself on the Queen's birthday. Fined 5s and 30s damages. — The two natives concerned in the riot at Clive again appeared, and were further remanded, the necessary evidences not having all been procured. Henare To moana, who was present, guaranteed their re-appearance when required. Our Paris letter, to band to-day, is Unavoidably held over. We are requested to call attention to the fact that the s.s. Rangatira will steam hence to-morrow morning at 7 o'clock sharp, for Poverty Bay, Tatiranga, and Auckland. The s.s. Napier will steam hence for Poverty Bay to-morrow morning at 8 o'clock. Mails for Australia close at the Bluff at 11 a.m. to-morrow. The mails brought by the Nebraska on her last tiip consisted of 426 bags for New Zealand, and 26 for the Australian colonies. The Provincial Councils of Otago, Canterbury, Nelson, Taranaki, and Wellington are now all in session, while that of Elawke's Bay will meet in a few days. Referring to the cargo of sheep taken to Auckland from port by a late trip of the Star of the South, the New Zealand Herald pays;—" They ar« without doubt the finest lot of animals ever received into this province from Napier. Three hundred and forty of them weigh from 901bs to 1201b* each, and the oiher 60U from 701 bs to 901bs each. They ha* e arrived in splendid condition."—We may mention that the cargo of cattle despatched hence bv the Star on Saturday night was the finest ever shipped from this province. At her Majesty's Court, held at Buckingham Palace on February 29, amongst other colonial celebrities, Dr. Featherston, Agent-General of New Zealand, was piesented by Earl Kimberley, and Miss Featherston by the Countess of Kimberley. The editor of the Taranaki Herald has been grossly insulted. From a lale issue we extract the following:—VVe really wish the owners of those useful but stubborn animals the donkeys would not bring them so near our office, by '* our devil," through one. An ass We were unwit tingly insulted yesterday was left at a blacksmith's shop close by, to be shod, and whilst waiting, let off one of those unearthly brays. Immediately afterwards there was a knock at our sanctum door and " our imp," putting in his head, said u Did you call, sir?" The ink bottle is smashed, and the office door, near where the boy's head appeared, is disfigured. The New Zealand Herald, May 22, sa y kS • —We regret to notice in our obituary column the death of Captain Lilewall, late of the firm of Lilewall and Rattray, ship chandlers, and a resident of Auckland for nearly thirty years. Captain Lilewall arrived in the colony as master of the Wesleyan Mission vessel Triton, a command which he held for some years. Subsequently lie purchased the barque Glencoe at San Francisco, and carried on a successful intercolonial trade, The deceased had just removed, on the day of his death, to a farm at Tamalu West, on which he intended to spend his declining vears It is supposed that the excitement of moving brought on the fit of apoplexy, which caused, his. death in a veiy few hours^
