Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 1872.

As the time approaches for the session pf the Colonial Parliament .signs of activity begin to appear in the political world. On the one hand we find independent member’s and Government ppponents addressing their constituents, pondemning the course pursued by the Ministry in squandering the resources placed in their hands by the borrowing scheme; and on the other hand we see the Government preparing for a struggle by rewarding old supporters, and removing troublesome opponents from their sphere of active opposition. Of the latter class, perhaps no single individual in the ranks* of the opposition has been so irritating to the Govern ment as Mr-Gillies, the Superintendent pf Auckland. Ever watchful for delinquencies, and active in exposing them when discovered, he during last session proved himself one of the most formidable of their opponents, and it is not to be wondered at if Government find some method of preventing a repetition pf so unpleasant a process during the pomiug session. Accordingly we tind that it is probable he will be made a Judge. Ho secret is made of the intention of the Government in this matter, for though considerable time has plapsed since the ruinpr was promulgated ip. the Auckland press, Government has not felt it necessary to discountenance the idea. Its pot having plone so is equivalent to ap admis-ion pf the fact, and it is even probable that the rumor originated from a Government source. At all events, when we find drat so many ipso facto appointments have beep denied by Government organs vvlien somewhat prematurely announced by the opposition press, we may faiily conclude that the absence of official contradiction in this pase is sufficient confirmation of its truth. As all parties admit the wisdom of the appointmept on the ground o,f Mr Gillies’ fitness fo.r the pffice, anti the necessity of snob an appointment in thp event of Mr Beckbarn’s retirement, vye do not Ip now that anything can be said against it. We merely note the good stroke ot policy -n the part of the Government by

which they make an efficient public servant, and at the same time rid themselves of one of their most powerful antagonists in the House of Kepre sentatives, ? , „
