Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 1873.

According to the Government timetable, the next English Mail via California will be due at Auckland on Monday next, 22nd inst. The Nevada, the outward mails for Europe, America, &c, was to have left Auckland to-day, for San Francisco. Owing to heavy weather on the qoast, the s.s. Rangatira was compelled to put back to Wellington yesterday, arriving at port at 12 20 p.m. She resumed her voyage at 12.30 this afternoon, and may, therefore, be expected in port tomorrow afternoon. It will be seen by advertisement that the Rangatira will steam for Poverty Bay, Tauranga, and Auckland on Monday evening. The steamer Wonga Wonga, with the English Mail via Sue?, arrived at Auckland yesterday morning, from Sydney, —not at as reported in our last. We extract the following paragraph from the Wellington Independent of the 4tb inst. ; —On the calling over of the names of the Grand Jury yesterday morning, Mr John Martin did not answer to his name. His Honor Mr Justice Johpston inquired if there was any person in attendance in a position to swear to the eircuras'ances that prevented} Mr Martin attending. A brother juryman volunteered a statement which was by no means satisfactory to Jlis Honor. The officer of the Court who had served the summons upon Mr Martin, informed his Honor that Mr Martin had declined to receive the summons, stating that as he would be unable to be present at the sitting of the Court it no use serving him with it. JJis Honor commented severely upon the want of respeot shown in Mr Martin's disregard to the orders of the Court, and asked the Registrar if Mi' Martin had made any affidavit of Jiis inability to attend, an interrogation which met with a negative response. A son of Mr Martin appeared to state that his father could not possibly attend the Court in consequence of the exis tence of an engagement contracted previous to the leceipt of the summons. Jlis Honor said gentlemen who were cajlcd upon to fill the position of grand jurymen should not require instruction in such a matter, and should thoroughly understand that the business of the Supreme Couit could not be transacted by clerks and boys rushing about ai their master's request with messages to the officers of the Court. Mr Martin, jun., Said IttS lather intended calling upon

his Honor privately to inform him that he could not he present. His Honor said Mr Mai tin should have taken the trouble to make the necessary affidavit. He should know lhat the law was no respecter of persons, and that rich and poor were treated alike. If Mr Martin had taken the liberty of calling upon him, as intimated by his son, he should certainly have fined him £IOO, for if opportunity were given to do such things the whole fabric of justice would fall to the ground. Mr Martin would be fined .£5, and good cause would have to be shown why the penalty should not be enforced. At a dejeuner given in Melbourne recently to the officers of the Russian corvette Tzamroud, Mr Vogel was a guest, and in his speech foreshadowed the repeal by the Imperial Government of clauses in the Australian Constitution Acts preventing the colonies from making special tariffs with one another. Another nugget, weighing 50 ounce?, has been found ah JFlaxbourne Creek, Westport. The population of Reefton is rapidly increasing. Freight from Westport to Reefton is £2O per ton. Carts and wagons are exceedingly scarce.
