His Excellency the Governor crossed over the ferry at the Port about eight o'clock this morning, and took his de parture shortly afterwards in Cobb's coach for Taupo, from whence he will travel on horseback to Tauranga, where, we believe, he will embark on board the C.G. p s. Luna, proceeding to Auckland. The Governor will be accompanied in his tour by Capt. Maohell, S. Locke, Esq., and other gentlemen. The Evening Post declares that it "would bean insult to the people of New Zealand to suppose that they are fairly represented by the individuals who are at present privileged to write M,H,JR, after their names," In spite of the contradiction given by the Nelson Colonist to the statement that Mr Ldghtband, M.H.R., intends resigning his seat for Nelson, the Nelson Examiner says :— w We believe we are correct in stating that on Mr I4ghtband resigning his seat for Nelson, the candidates for the vacancy will be Mr. J, 0. Richmond Mr Liuckie." The Qtago Daily Times chronicles the capture of a brown traut R from the Water of Lexth,, weighing a pound and &vee quarters*

Following close on the heels of diphtheria, which has been fatally prevalent lately among children at Ohristohurch, soarlet fever has now made ics appearance there. The recent sitting of the Supreme Court at Hokitika has furnished a remarkable example of the vagnries of a Grand Jury. Fo'irteen indictments were presented and seven were ignored, although in some of the cases the primd facie evidence as given before the committing magistrate was of the strongest possible character. The Westland journals comment very strongly upon tliis illustration of the inutility of grand juries.

"Curly" Biay, who competed with Manning in a late wrestling match at Cbrisichurch. is unable to resume work. The muscles of the client were so strained in the contest that he has been under medical treatment- ever since. Indeed, the injury is quite as bed, if not worse, than having broken ribs. A four-year-old short-horn heifer, weighing nearly two tons, has lately been exhibited in Auckland. It was reared at Wanganui. Not long ago a prisoner in one of the jails not a hundred miles from Dunedin, who had been sentenced to hard labor, resolutely refused to work on account of its severity. rations were re duced—still he refused; then he was consigned to the solitary cell, which is usually a most powerful persuasive, for even a desperate criminal has a dread of a solitary cell, but his obstinacy was still unshaken. The Yisiting Justices at length gave authority for him to be flagged, as it was necessary that discipline should be maintained, and he was tied up and received a dozen lashes. The "cat" brought him to submission, and after his back was healed he did his work without trouble. When his sentence had expired, and he was leaving the jail, he said to the governor, " You will never see me here again, I can tell you that." His experience of jail life had been such as not to tempt him to renew his acquaintance with it —yet, in the course of a few weeks, the same man was committed to the very same jail for another term of hard labor.
