The steamer Napier "leaves for Poverty. Bay this evening, at 6 o'clock.

The firing for the choice of district representatives for the Colonial Prize Firing takes place at 6 o'clock to-mor-row morning.

A daring attempt—fortunately unsuccessful—fo set lire to Napier Jail took place on Friday last, by a man named Browne, who is undero-oing 12 months imprisonment for felony. It appears that on the morning in question Browne was discovered depositing some paper, rags, &c., saturated with kerosine and grease, in one of the airholes of the prison, to which, of course, he had intended to apply a match on the first convenient opportunity. The prisoner will be brought before the Resident Magistrate shortly.

The new steam launch made a successful trial trip this afternoon, and afterwards steamed for Petane with a general cargo.

We learn (hat the barque Rapido is expected to leave Nelson for tliis port about Saturday next.

The steamer Keera, from Napier and Poverty Bay, arrived at Tauranga at 5 o'clock this morning and left for Auckland at 11.15. a.m.

The Evening Post, 19th inst., says : —A private telegram received in town to-day, announces that the s.s. Keera, which left for Napier on Wednesday night, met with heavy weather off Castle Point. The bulwarks were washed away, the fore-yard and the fore-trysail were lost, and 50 cases of kerosine, shipped by Messrs Bannatyne and Co. ? were washed overboard.

The Canterbury Press says that the sale of waste lands at the Government buildings on the 18th inst. was tionably large, being no less than 1604 acres—ls 4 being in the Timaru district ; Waitangi, 1370 ; Ellesmere, 30; and Oxford, 50.
