At a recent meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society, iv brief account of which wp give, irom tho independent, Di* Hecior gave some*
interesting information concerning the iish recently cast up by the sea close to the beach on the north side of Cook's Straits, and in the same journal we find a paragraph stating that among the fish recently cast up there was not to be found any representatives of the species which frequent Wellington harbor. They were mostly of the .cod family, were deep sea fish, and have tails the formation of which would remler their efforts to escape from rough or broken water of little avail. The tail is peculiar in shape, being very long, with little of the web or fibrous structure found in what in Wellington would be called ordinary iish, and jt is supposed that the recent gale, having forced the fish into the breakers, they lacked the power whWi a good fin would provide them -with, and were east up on the beach. By the Estimates for 1371-2 we notice the Government intend to abolish the billet of Inspector of Stores, now filled by Colonel Gorton, Mr Vogel reckoning it as one of his retrenchment items.
