Hawke's Bay Times. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1871.

A very sad case of sudden death occurred on Sunday morning. The unfortunate deceased was Mrs T. D.. Smithy of Coote road, who was discovered sitting in her chair on the morning in* question, quite dead. We understand that an inquest "was held on the body yesterday, and a verdict returned of. " .Died from natural causes." A slight shock of earthquake was. felt in Napier and its vicinity about a quarter to 8- o'clock yesterday morning. Its apparent direction was from west to ; east. The Artillery Band open-air concert,, announced for Saturday evening, did not come oft', in consequence of the high wind prevailing at the time. The s.s. Keera, Capt. Carey, from Auckland via Tauranga and Poverty Bay, arrived in port yesterday morning. She leaves for the South to morrow. The s.s. Albion is now announced to steam hence for Auckland on Saturdaynext, 30th imt., instead of tormorrow, as previously advertised. The s.s. Napier took her departure for Waimarama at 1 o'clock this morning. She is announced by advertisement to steam for Poverty Bay at &• o'clock to-niyltt. The s.s. Star of the South was expected to leave Auckland for Napier on Saturday la*t, and may, therefore, be looked for here to-night or to morrow. We would remind the public that theNapier Rifle Volunteer picnic comes off this day in Mr Hallett's paddock as Meanee. Another rifle match between Mr Christie, of Otago, and Mr Walker, of the Thames—this time lor ,£I,OOO asi({e —i s likely to come otf shortly, the latter gentleman having accepted the challenge of the former on one viz., that the match be tired either in Auckland or at the Thames. To provethat he meant business, Mr Walker's letter of accex>tance was accompanied bv a deposit of £260. Mr W. declines going to Dunedin to tire the match, not that he entertains any fear as to. the result, but he does not care to be again subjected to various annoyances he experienced during the other match. We learn from late papers that dysentery is very prevalent at the Thames at the" present time. The heat of theweather and the badness of the water ill general nse are assigned as the probable causes. The Melbourne Ice ha;* declaied a dividend at the rate of 5 per cent per annum;.
