Mails for Australia close at Hokitika at 11 a.m. to morrow, Thd Volunteer Artillery Band openair conceit, deferred from Wednesday evening, takes place this (Friday) even ing, at half-past 7 o'clock. We had occasion a few days since to refer to some of the work turned out of our local foundry, We saw to-day another piece of work executed in the same establishment, being no less than a new sciew propeller, weighing about 1 lewt, for the s.s. Napier. Some time ago that vessel met with an accident, by which one of the flanges was broken off the screw. A new screw was obtained in another Province, but it was found defective in pitch, and consequently not equal to the old one. The new casting i« correct in this particular, being-modelled on the old one; and here some ingenuity was required, as the mould of the third flange had to be formed without a model. This is the first job of the kind executed in this Province, and is another sign of the advance Port Ahuriii is making. The District Court sat this morning. Alder son and Sons v. Landon. —The plaintiffs in this case reside in Sydney, and their agents not having been sufficiently authorised to commence proceedings, the case was struck out France and Boyle v. /. M. Stuart. —This was an action brought by the trustees in the estate of W. R. Miller, deceased, to recover a sum of money alleged to have been paid twice over by mistake. Mr A. P. Stuart, of Wellington, the agent of the defendant, had been summoned ; but it was shown that the power of at torney under which he acted made no provision for his defending cases on behalf of his principal.—His Honor said he never saw a power of attorney which came so near granting this power without actually doing so ; but it was necessary to construe these documents very strictly, and as the power was not specially granted, the defendant's agent could not defend the suit.—This case also was therefore struck ou:.
