The Daily Southern Cross, in it* monthly summary, published on the Ist November, says : There has not been nearly so much activity in mining .stock during the past month. This may be accounted for more by a series of mishaps which have occurred in the Caledonian mine than by any decreased confidence in the resources of ihe field. The Caledonian pumping machinery has broken down repeatedly, and the large inflow of water prevented the progress of work in the mine. A large decrease in the yield was the result. This decline affected .considerably the price of shares in that company, and cramped speculation in other stocks, which are all more or less active in proportion to the prosperity of the leading company. We are glad, however, to°be able to state that the pumps of the Caledonian have now been repaired, and are working satisfactorily. It is probable that they will be sufficiently powerful to keep the mine clear of wa lev until the splendid machinery of the United Pumping Association is erected. An instance of the uncertainty of life occurred at Wanganui a few days ago. A painter named Evans, who was on the 24th uld. engaged in painting a shop in the Avenue, awoke in the night with a choking sensation in his :hroat —felt himself, in fact, seriously ill, and after sntiering great pain died at eight o'clock the next morning. He left a wife and five children to deplore his loss.
